Opportunity Snapshot

In this highly visible position you will showcase your creativity as you ensure that accounting processes, particularly reports and tools, are functioning in the most efficient manner possible. You will join a forward-looking organization and play a key role in our commitment to using the latest technologies to maintain our competitive advantage. While many in this market are closing their doors, Prospect Mortgage is growing strong, leveraging a solid national sales infrastructure, talented senior leadership, and solid capital backing. We've created a team-oriented, energetic, and upbeat culture with a focus on success.

You will build and maintain reports and tools for a variety of users and also conduct analyses. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases, including the ability to pull data from SQL tables and manipulate it into reports in various applications. You also will need solid knowledge of object oriented programming languages, ideally VBA, and advanced skills in MS Excel and Access. We're looking for a professional with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with end users to thoroughly understand the bigger picture goals and purpose of any given report. In addition you'll need some experience with accounting or finance reports and processes.

Established in 2006, Prospect Mortgage specializes in acquiring midsized residential lenders, providing them with capital, cost-efficiencies, and increased resources while maintaining a decentralized, entrepreneurial business model.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree from a four-year college/university in an analytical field, preferably business; however, we also will consider non-degreed candidates with significant relevant experience.
  • Data analysis experience in corporate environments.
  • A demonstrated ability to retrieve data from multiple sources and present it in useful and insightful formats.
  • Experience developing and implementing process efficiencies.
  • Excellent analytical, logical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to interact successfully across all levels of the organization, especially with senior management.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize activities.
  • The ability to:
    • Effectively foster and contribute to a team environment.
    • Be successful in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment with demanding turnaround times.
    • Manage and contribute to multiple simultaneous projects.
  • A proven self-starter approach with a track record of working independently to successfully meet project deadlines.
  • High attention to detail, especially towards ensuring data integrity.
  • A solid sense of professional accountability.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • General knowledge of the mortgage industry is preferred but not required.

What's in It for You

Broad visibility -- you'll provide valuable insights to senior decision makers, including the Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer (to whom you will report) and Vice President of Finance. You also will interact with a variety of functional areas such as HR, Treasury, Capital Markets and others.

Technology at the core -- we're always looking for new opportunities to translate technology into efficiencies that improve performance and control costs; for example, we're currently looking at layering a financial reporting tool onto our existing JD Edwards accounting application. You'll learn new technologies and skills right along with us.

Great environment -- if you're looking for a "heads down" analyst/programmer role, this is not the position for you. You'll interact with a diverse array of professionals from all over our organization. At Prospect you'll find an optimistic work culture and people committed to succeeding and growing, and having fun in the process.

Fresh business model -- as the dust settles following the mortgage industry shakeup, the companies that are proving to be successful are entrepreneurial and agile, and Prospect is leading that revolution. We are purchasing defunct retail platforms (for example, we recently acquired about 70 Indymac branches) to create a nationwide footprint. And we're doing business and growing quickly: new home sales are up, and low interest rates have ignited a boom in re-financing.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary we offer comprehensive benefits.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details. You will join a team of 12 in Accounting, although your interactions will extend beyond this group. More than half of your projects will come from the EVP & Chief Accounting Officer and the VP of Finance, but you'll also work with HR, Payroll, Treasury, AP, the internal branch reporting and capital markets groups and others.

This position is a combination of programming and analysis in which you will maintain existing proprietary tools, build new tools to continue automating accounting processes, and contribute to ad hoc analyses related to both process and financials. Projects tend to be fairly short, two to three weeks long, and at any given time you can expect to have multiple projects under way.

Most tools are written in DBA and typically they draw data from SQL Server and other sources, manipulate it, and present it in Excel or Access formats. For example, we recently developed a tool to list all loans held for sale as of a given date. A user can choose a particular date and other parameters (current price, long term debt, FICO scores, etc) and pull up an Excel report listing all outstanding loans along with other important information. Like most reports, this one reconciles with other accounting information, in this case the General Ledger.

Keys to Success

Pivotal to your success will be your ability to interact and communicate effectively with users at all different levels, including listening carefully, drilling down to ensure you understand the needs clearly, and respecting their deadlines and urgency. You also will need to be thorough in reviewing your own work, both before you release it to the users and in the event an issue arises after release. Almost every report and tool you'll build and maintain reconciles to something, making attention to detail essential.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Who We Are

When others see nothing but a downturn in the mortgage industry, Prospect sees opportunity. We understand how to grow for long-term results. We recognize individual companies that have the talent and tools for success. With fresh capital, cost-efficient scale, and decades of mortgage know-how, we are building a network of excellence coast-to-coast that combines the perfect blend of centralized strength and localized entrepreneurialism and leadership.
